Then again, sometimes it IS easy to write a poem based on a prompt. Today's prompt was to write about receiving a million tax-free dollars. THAT was pretty easy!!
“Million Dollar Dreams” 6-17-09
This million dollars
is more than adequate
for my small dreams.
With it, I need never again
sell my freedom for a dollar,
wear a uniform,
put up with office politics,
answer to someone
who may know less than I
and cares nothing about me
or my life outside my job,
tolerate verbal abuse
just to make a living.
From now on,
I can call all my time
my own,
keep my own schedule,
sleep when I want
for as long as I want,
dress as I wish, ignore
political correctness,
and speak my mind
without fear of being fired.
.
My life will be
one long weekend,
one lengthy vacation
of doing the things I love.
I will read books all day
and write my own.
I will take my wanderlust
to the road in my own RV
and experience more
of the country I live in.
And I will buy my own home
for the first – and last – time,
no McMansion
with a swimming pool
in some exotic location,
but something simple and small –
a new manufactured home
placed on a small lot
in the town I live in now.
I want only comfort,
not extravagance,
I don’t need a luxury car,
diamond jewelry,
expensive clothes,
art treasures,
or trips around the world.
Those were never my dreams,
so why should they be now?
My dreams were of freedom
from others’ control,
from want, from fear,
from a life of quiet desperation.
This million dollars
will be more than adequate
to meet those small dreams.
