I am about to make my first post in almost four months.
It has taken me this long to find the time in what has become a very busy schedule.
Four months ago I was asked to write an article for a local newspaper. The editor was impressed enough with my writing that he made me a staff writer.
At the present time I am covering six beats, plus writing occasional features and reviews. This keeps me VERY busy, as I said above. I attend meetings and do interviews and then spend more than a little time writing articles about them. I almost always have a front page story, sometimes two, and this week, all the stories were mine. I have had as many as four major stories in the paper at once, and it's only an eight page paper!
I credit the on-line classes I took through Gotham Writers Workshop and my experience in writing this blog, albeit briefly prior to my writing for the paper, with giving me the skills and confidence to make the leap to my present position.
And it's true - the more I write, the better my writing becomes.
I would encourage anyone who wants to start writing to take one of Gotham's classes. Their classes get you writing and keep you writing. You also pick up critiquing skills that help you edit your own work. Gotham's website is www.writingclasses.com. While I took Non-fiction Writing, Memoir, and Travel Writing, ironically I did not get around to taking a class in Article Writing!
